Dranesville Dragons are Attending, Connecting, and Learning

Thank you, Dranesville families, for your continued partnership in ensuring that students are in school every day. Students' connections with their peers, teachers, and instruction are all positively impacted by being in school daily. Spring Assessments Measure Student Learning and Progress

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes standardized benchmark assessments and progress assessments. This list of assessments for each grade level provides information about required assessments for each grade level.

Remember, assessment is part of ongoing teaching and learning in the classroom. Teachers may also assign end-of-year projects.

Parents and caregivers can help students perform their best by reminding them to get a good night’s rest and have a healthy breakfast, especially on testing days. It is important that students attend school on these dates. If you become aware of a conflict that could result in your student missing a test, please notify our attendance team as soon as possible.

Spring assessments do not signal the end of coursework for the year. Learning continues through the last day of school. We appreciate you and look forward to our continued partnership as our Dranesville Dragons finish the 23-24 school year strong!

Students at Dranesville Elementary are developing Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and learning skills that will help them to succeed in school and in life. The five POG attributes include:

  • Communicator

  • Goal-Directed & Resilient Individual

Think about the opportunities and challenges you encounter each day and the skills you use to navigate them. We would love to invite you to participate in our Career Fair on Monday, June 10th to share how Portrait of a Graduate attributes are important in your career and to help our students envision the career opportunities and possibilities that are available for them to pursue.

Please sign up to communicate your interest and availability to participate in our Career Fair on Monday, June 10th.

Social Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher or counselor.

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards and may also be used to measure growth in learning state standards. Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments are the main part of the Virginia Assessment Program for grades 3-12. SOL tests are used to fulfill:

  • Federal requirements for annual testing in reading, mathematics, and science
  • State requirements for testing in writing and social studies
  • Graduation requirements for verified credit to earn a standard or advanced studies diploma

210 students earned Perfect Attendance

222 students had Outstanding Attendance

Go, Dragons! We see you. We're glad you're here!

Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

Students will have the opportunity to safely observe this extraordinary phenomenon via the NASA livestream. We hope everyone takes this chance to learn more about the wonders of space!

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

We hope that all of our Dragons have a wonderful Spring Break. We look forward to welcoming students back on April 3rd for our 130th day of school.

Exciting News: DreamMugs

Dranesville Elementary’s PTA thrilled to announce our partnership with DreamMugs, a nonprofit focused on empowering kids with disabilities, through AI-generated art! DreamMugs specializes in collaborating with young minds to bring their imaginative artwork to life on beautiful, tangible products.

This March, in honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, the program will kick off with a pilot program designed for our special education classes. This initiative is a testament to DreamMugs' commitment to inclusivity and their mission to provide a platform for all children to express themselves and shine.

Following the success of the pilot, DreamMugs will also open its program to families who want to support its mission, offering a chance for others to participate in this enriching experience later in the school year.

Supporting DreamMugs means supporting a mission that cherishes inclusivity, innovation, and the sheer joy of creativity. Let's come together to encourage our children to dream big and create freely! Stay tuned for more details on how your child can leave their mark with DreamMugs.

It was a morning of joy as we welcomed rising Kindergartners and families to Kindergarten Orientation.

Thank you to all of the families who joined us for Kindergarten Orientation this morning. We are honored to continuing building the foundation of love and learning that you have fostered at home. We shared lots of information with you this morning. Slides are on our website for you.

Attendance Matters at Dranesville

Over the past two weeks, there have been multiple days that entire grade levels have been present. We challenged each grade level to be 100% present on Monday, March 4th. Mrs. Gadley was prepared for a sweet Pie the Principal celebration.

While we didn't have 100% at any grade level, our attendance was excellent! Fourth grade was so close to 100%, with one student absent. Sixth graders had a strong and joyful presence, with only three students absent.

We are going to give our Dragons another chance for this sweet attendance celebration. Grade levels with 100% attendance on Friday, March 22nd will be part of a Pie the Principal event.
