Reminder   Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Tracey Jenkins at [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Tracey Jenkins at [email protected].

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Boundary Review Community Meeting

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Wednesday, December 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at Madison High School Cafeteria.

If you are unable to attend on this date, view the full list of meetings on the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage.

Viewing Your Child's Benchmark Unit Assessments

As part of our new curriculum this year for Language Arts, all students will be completing a unit assessment at the end of each unit. These assessments will provide teachers with a snapshot of how students are progressing in grade level expectations and include questions that cover multiple progress report standards. These assessments will be one of the data points that will be considered when assigning progress report scores.

The unit assessment is a measure of your child’s performance on grade level standards. In Language Arts, students will be working on their grade level standards throughout the year, and are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the school year. You can expect performance on the unit assessments to increase over time as the students continue to learn and practice their grade level skills. The results of this assessment will inform your child’s teacher of areas where they need additional instruction and practice, so they can continue to work towards mastering grade level standards.

You can view your child’s unit assessment results in Benchmark Universe by logging on through Clever using your child’s username and password (https://www.clever.com/in/fairfax). You will see the unit assessment listed under assignments. Click the book icon to open the unit assessment and navigate through the assignment to view the questions and responses.

Family Facing Curriculum: Overview of What Students are Learning Second Quarter

Instruction in Virginia's public schools is guided by the Standards of Learning (SOL). The standards describe the expectations for student learning, assessment, and achievement in grades K-12.

Pacing is the how and when teachers teach the standards. Each school division creates its own pacing. These pacing overviews are examples of how and when teachers organize and teach the curriculum. They are organized by quarter and by week.

Thanksgiving Lunch and Family Math Schedule

51st Day of School Chronic Absentee Rate is 7.4% compared to 7.7% this time last year.

Thank you, Dranesville families, for supporting students' daily attendance. We appreciate your scheduling appointments early in the morning or late afternoon so that your children are able to be present for as much of the instructional day as possible. It is said that absences add up, which is true. We also know that all of the instruction that students are present for adds up and supports them in leveling up their learning and achievement.

Instructional Calendar Reminder

As we approach the winter holidays, please keep in mind that instruction including intervention and enrichment are planned for every school day. Our goal is for every student to be reading on or above grade level. Grade level instruction and specialized instruction is delivered every day.

Students identified for intervention based on VAALLS (K-3) or iReady (3-6) and have a reading plan, are receiving this intervention through December 20th. Student's reading plans are available in SIS Parent VUE. We appreciate all of your efforts to schedule appointments and vacations during school holidays so that students are present for instruction.

📈 Fall Student Testing Results Screening Assessment Reports Available in SIS ParentVUE

Each fall, FCPS students take part in screening assessments for reading and mathematics to identify strengths and areas for support. Score reports for families are posted in ParentVUE in the “Documents” section, generally about one month after testing has been completed.

  • iReady reports in grades 1-8 and Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) reports in grades 1-3 are available in ParentVUE now
  • VALLSS and Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) reports for kindergarteners will be available by Friday, November 15, and for pre-K students by Friday, December 6

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student tests at each grade level, including what each test is for and when each test takes place. Caregivers may follow up with their children’s teachers for more information about how they use test results to support student success.

K-6 Language Arts Instruction

FCPS has adopted Benchmark Advance for the Language Arts basal resource. Benchmark Advance provides 9 common knowledge-building units across K-6. The units integrate social studies, science, and literary topics. There are multiple text sets per topic, including fiction and nonfiction.

Students who require additional support -- either intervention or extensions receive this differentiated instruction during small group time and during our WIN (What I Need) time during the instructional day.

Benchmark Overview for Families

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report today, it might look different. Keep in mind that the skills that students are being taught are building as we progress through each unit and throughout the school year. You can find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Select your student’s grade level and content area to see detailed information.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

Thank you, Dranesville Community!

Dranesville gathers at the Homecoming parade staging area.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the entire Dranesville community for coming together to make our participation in the Herndon Homecoming Parade truly magical. It's inspiring to be part of a community with such spirit and joy.

A special thanks to the Kessler, Rigling, and Franklin families for their incredible work in coordinating Dranesville's Magic School Bus theme and creating a float that was Out of this World. It's always a highlight to see our sixth-grade Dragons shine on the float.

To all the students, families, and staff who made signs, decorated stars with staff names for the float, or cheered us on during the parade, we felt your energy and love. We appreciate your support!

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend! Remember, in honor of Veterans Day there is no school on Monday, November 11th. We will see everyone on Tuesday, November 12th.

Spotlight on Student Voice

Dragon's Spark is Dranesville's monthly school newspaper, produced by our Student Journalism Club. The club and newspaper were the idea of two students who asked to have lunch with Mrs. Gadley to "pitch an idea". It was a remarkable idea, as Dragon's Spark shines a light on school matters and events from the perspective of our students.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Campus Safety Reminders No Pets on School Grounds

We love dogs, too!  However, please follow the county guidance and signs around Dranesville and leave your dog at home when you walk to drop off or pick up your student.  Some students are afraid, some are allergic, and the number of students at peak arrival and dismissal times can scare your pup. Let's not take any chances.  We want to keep our students and four legged friends healthy and safe. Thank you!

Learning Cottages are an Extension of our School Building

Visitor Pass Required to Access Learning Cottage Area

While we understand that families are still getting acclimated with learning cottages, they are an extension of our school building. To access the learning cottage area, all visitors are required to check in at the main office.

Meet Walkers on Blacktop | Use Kiss and Ride Loop for Kiss and Ride

Please use designated areas for arrival and dismissal of students including Blacktop for walkers and Kiss and Ride loop for car riders. When students arrive after 9:20 or are picked up before dismissal, our office team coordinates a supervised walk or the buddy system to/from the learning cottages.

Thank you for helping to keep our students and campus safe!

Dranesville Elementary Recognized as a Common Sense School

As we celebrate Digital Citizenship Week, we pause to recognize the leadership of our Tech Coach, Ms. Young. Ms. Young not only led the efforts for Dranesville to earn the Common Sense badge in the 23-24 school year, she supports our teachers with purposefully using technology to enhance instruction. She teaches our students how to use technology as communicators, collaborators, and global and ethical citizens.

Dranesville ES is taking part in Digital Citizenship Week! We’ll have daily activities to help students think about how technology affects their lives, as well as a Spirit week with daily themes to continue the conversation and reflect on how they can use technology to be a positive influence in their community. Use these conversation starters to help your kids talk about their digital lives:

First graders in Ms. Comeau's class engaged in an interactive read loud during morning meeting. While reading Nerdy Birdy Tweets, students reflected on how we, as Digital Citizens, should stop, think, and make good choices. This is also supportive of being a good friend. We practiced this strategy throughout the day today.

Thank you, Mrs. Gadley, for Loving and Leading our School Community

October is National Principals Month. We celebrate and thank our Principal, Mrs. Gadley, for leading the Dranesville community with compassion and care.  Your joy and commitment to excellence is inspiring.
