Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Family Reflection and Feedback

Thank you to our families who joined us for coffee and connection this morning. We discussed the FCPS Strategic Plan, Dranesville's Measurable Outcomes for 2024-2025, and ways that we can enhance our home-school partnership to elevate excellence for all students at Dranesville.

Advanced Academic Programs  Elementary Continuum of Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students. Through the continuum, students have:

• Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
• A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.

Teachers, Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs), and school administrators work together to provide the following levels of service at the elementary level:

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

• All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons.
• Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP

Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.
Because Access to Rigor is for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Subject-Specific Services Grades K-6
Some students are strong in a specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these area(s) by:

• Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
• Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
• Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

Part-Time Services, Grades 3-6
Some students have advanced academic needs in multiple subject areas in addition to specific subject differentiation. They need Part-Time AAP services.

• Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
• Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-Time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Full-Time Services, Grades 3-8
Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for Full-Time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

• Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
• Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.

Full-Time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Advanced Academic Program Services
Multiple data points are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports,
achievement and ability scores, and parent input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in
the classroom. No pieces of the data are weighted in the holistic screening process.

Eligibility decisions for Subject-Specific and Part-Time services are made by a committee at the local school, and screening is ongoing throughout the school year. To refer for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services, submit the AAP School-Based Referral Form to the AART at the local school.

Eligibility decisions for Full-Time AAP services are made by the countywide central screening committee.

Screening for Full-Time services occurs during specific screening cycles:

• Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January.
o The fall screening referral window is from the first day of school - October 15.
• Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student.
o The spring screening referral window is from the first day of school - December 15.

Please do not wait for test scores before submitting a referral for your student in Grades 2-7. Referrals submitted after the Full-Time services referral windows noted above will not be accepted.

Referral forms for all advanced academic program services are found at
https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893.

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: Advanced Academics Identification and Placement for Current FCPS Students | Fairfax County Public Schools.

Ability Testing
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration of the holistic screening process for advanced academic services. Test scores are not weighted or prioritized in the holistic screening process.

• All students in Grade 1 take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT).
• All students in Grade 2 take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
• NNAT and/or CogAT may be administered to students in Grades 3-6 who do not have an ability test score during the regularly scheduled testing windows.

Parents or guardians may request a one-time retest of either the CogAT or the NNAT in grades 3-6.

Requests must be made during the fall testing windows. Please contact the school testing coordinator Megan Kowalczik, no later than September 15 to request the CogAT or October 15 for the NNAT.

Elementary Parent Information Meeting
A parent information meeting will be held at Dranesville Elementary on
September 18th at 6:00 pm. The AART, Tracey Jenkins, will provide information about
levels of service, explain the screening processes, and answer questions about advanced academic services.

Young Scholars
The FCPS Young Scholars model seeks to identify and affirm, from an early age, students with high academic potential from groups historically underrepresented in advanced academic programming. The goal of the model is to eliminate barriers for Young Scholars’ access to and success in advanced academic opportunities in elementary, middle, and high school.

Twice-Exceptional (2e)
Some gifted students with advanced learning needs may also have a learning disability. Twice-exceptional (or “2e”) students need strengths-based instruction while receiving advanced programming. The FCPS continuum of AAP services provides multiple entry points to meet student needs while also supporting their learning challenges. FCPS has created a 2e handbook to help schools and families understand how to identify and serve 2e students. You can find these resources by going to www.fcps.edu and searching “2e.”

Advanced Academic Programs in Middle and High School
Middle School AAP Advanced coursework at the middle school level is open enrollment. All students are encouraged to enroll in at least one Honors course each school year in an area of strength and/or interest.
Students eligible for the Full-Time services have the option to attend the middle school center assigned to their address or enroll in Honors courses in the four core content areas at their base school.

High School AAP
Advanced coursework at the high school level is open enrollment. All students are encouraged to enroll in at least one Honors course beginning in Grade 9. Each high school in FCPS offers AP, IB or Dual Enrollment courses which begin in Grade 10 or 11, depending on the program and the school.

Additional information about middle and high school services may be found on the Advanced Academic Programs web page: Middle School Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) | Fairfax County Public Schools (fcps.edu).

Celebrating 10 Days of Perfect Attendance with Students

Thank you, Dranesville families, for establishing routines that support daily attendance. 495 of our Dragons in K-6 had perfect attendance for the first 10 days of the school year! Did you know that in 10 school days, our students access over 1,000 minutes of Literacy instruction?

Tips for Healthy Routines

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways you can help your children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:

⭐     Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this              checklist in English or Spanish.)

⭐     Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

⭐     If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers or                school counselors for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and            excited about learning.

⭐     Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call            on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent. You are also                        welcome to call our team at Dranesville 703-326-5200. We are here to              help!

Whenever possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session. Here is the 24-25 school year calendar for your planning.

Dranesville Elementary School 24-25 Family Coffee Connections

FCPS Strategic Plan

While the five goals of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan focus on student success, the four pillars describe what FCPS must do well to reach our goals for all students:

The first focus of the pillars is on teaching and learning. We want to make sure each and every student has access to excellent and inclusive learning environments, and that instruction meets students’ individual needs.

The second pillar focuses on our connection with families and our communities. We cannot do this work alone. Strong partnerships are key to our students’ success.

The third pillar is centered on our hiring and maintaining a world class, diverse workforce. We want to make sure our incredible employees have what they need to help our students thrive.

The fourth and final pillar centers on how we bring this all together. We remain focused on creating a culture of equity, excellence, and accountability where data guides our decisions.

Visit our Strategic Plan webpage for more information.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year.

Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to our main office at Dranesville Elementary school by Monday, September 30

Thank you for your partnership in nurturing respect, empathy, responsibility, ownership, care, and inclusivity in your child and our school community.

Dranesville CARES

Our school-wide agreements are grounded in Portrait of a Graduate attributes and skills that students need to succeed in school and life.

At Dranesville:

  • We will consider the feelings of others when communicating by using respectful words.
  • We will be responsible by taking ownership of our learning community.
  • We will be caring by listening to, learning about, and valuing others.

These agreements support a positive learning environment for all members of our school community.

To reinforce these agreements at home, consider these questions:

  • How did you show respect for others today?
  • Did you take responsibility for your actions?
  • How did you demonstrate care for others?

By engaging in these conversations, you can help your child develop the skills needed to thrive in school and beyond.

Dranesville Dragons are Attending, Connecting and Learning

Attending: Thank you, families, for establishing routines that support daily attendance. Our teachers are planning and teaching lessons daily to support every students' learning. 550 of our 587 students in K-6 were present for our entire first week of school!

Connecting: Attending school daily provides students with regular opportunities to connect with teachers and peers. During the first week, students in every class participated in daily morning meetings. Morning meeting is a time to build relationships, learn routines, and set a positive tone for the day.

Learning: In these first few days and weeks of school, students are learning about the routines that will support learning. They are completing beginning of the year assessments to inform the instruction, intervention, and enrichment that our teachers will provide first quarter. They are also learning content.

What is My Child Learning? First Quarter Curriculum

Instruction in Virginia's public schools is guided by the Standards of Learning (SOL). The standards describe the expectations for student learning, assessment, and achievement. Go to the K-6 Family Facing Curriculum for an overview of what your child is learning first quarter (August 19 - October 31).

Back to School Night

Three years ago, we reimagined BTSN and it seemed to be a relief for our families to have options for accessing Back to School information. This year, we are going to continue to provide both virtual and in person options for you to access Back to School information. The same information will be available through the virtual and in person options.

Virtual Option: If you would like to access the virtual Back to School Night slides, they will be available in our Dranesville Parents and Family Schoology Course on Tuesday, September 10th.

How to Join the Dranesville All Parent & Guardian Schoology Course

In Person Option: If would like to visit your child's classroom(s), we welcome you to join us for Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 11th between 6:00 - 7:30 pm.

Please note that teachers will be present in classrooms from 6:00-7:30.

Children are welcome to attend.

Family Life Education (FLE)

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Dranesville Elementary School will host an opportunity for parents/guardians to preview FLE lessons on September 18th between 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

Dranesville Elementary School 24-25 Family Coffee Connections

Dranesville CARES about connection, access, relationships, excellence, and stakeholder engagement. This mission requires families and school staff partnering to support our Dranesville Dragons.

Our first Family Coffee and Connection of the school year is on September 10th from 9:30-10:30 am.

Dranesville CARES

We will consider the feelings of others when communicating by using respectful words.

We will be responsible by taking ownership of our learning community.

We will be caring by listening to, learning about, and valuing others.

Dranesville school agreements are a way of engaging all students in our school mission, Dranesville CARES. Care for ourselves, each other, and our world are important aspects of thriving as individuals and members of a community.

Our school agreements align with three Portrait of a Graduate attributes that students need to succeed in life. These agreements also support a positive learning environment for all members of our school community. We ask that you discuss these agreements with your child so they are well prepared for successful engagement when the school year begins.

Throughout the school year, students will engage in lessons and experiences to further develop skills as communicators, goal directed and resilient individuals, and global and ethical citizens. To reinforce these agreements at home, consider these questions:

  • How did you show respect for others today?
  • Did you take responsibility for your actions?
  • How did you demonstrate care for others?

By engaging in these conversations, you can help your child develop the skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. Thank you for your partnership in nurturing respect, empathy, responsibility, ownership, care, and inclusivity in your child and our school community.

Prepare for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account.

Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced MealsThe application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Science Olympiad and Reflections Art Program Volunteers

The PTA would love to launch the following programs this year:

  • Virginia Science Olympiad Coach Help form a team of students who will work together to compete in the Science Olympiad Tournament.  The events change from year to year, covering fields and topics including: anatomy and biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, geology, mechanical and structural engineering, and technology. More about the program.
  • Reflections Art Program Chairperson This competition encourages students to explore the arts and express themselves by providing positive recognition for their artistic efforts. A chairperson is needed to help collect entries and plan how we will celebrate the winning students. More about the program.

In order to offer these opportunities to our students, we need a head coach/chair to help get these programs started! You will have support from the PTA and the school. We’re super excited and hope you can help! Email [email protected] with questions or interest.

Easy Fundraising Opportunities

These activities include field trip buses, staff appreciation events, and so much more! To help meet these dual goals, we will be promoting some easy, shop-while-you-earn opportunities. Thanks for all you do to support Dranesville and the PTA!

Limited Early Release Mondays

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete the form emailed by Principal Gadley on Tuesday, August 6th, for each of your children who are enrolled at Dranesville Elementary.

    • Daily Access and Operations:

      • Main Office Location: There will be no change in the location of the main office.
      • Relocated SACC Rooms: SACC rooms will be relocated to accommodate construction. The SACC entrance will be adjacent to Door 3.

  • Construction Fencing and Barriers: Construction fencing and barriers have been installed around the site to separate construction areas from school operations.
