Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Thank You School Counselors

We are thankful for our school counselors who provide exceptional connection and care for our students. Students are greeted each day by the waves and warmth of Ms. Brouillard and Mrs. Ryan. They teach class lessons and small group lessons, serve on our attendance team, and coordinate mentor-mentee relationships.

We are so grateful for Ms. Brouillard and Mrs. Ryan's dedication to our students. Their hard work makes a real difference in their lives.

Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 during the week of March 4th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener

Join the PTA Board!

At the end of this school year, our Dranesville PTA president and several other board members will be stepping down, as they have reached their term limits. To ensure the Dranesville PTA continues to thrive and serve our community, we are seeking parents like you to step up and take on keyboard roles.

Currently we have openings for:

  • President
  • Communications Secretary
  • Treasurer

Our current board is committed to a smooth transition and is ready to offer the necessary support to set you up for success. But we need the active participation of new board members so that we can continue to support our community with events, scholarships, field trips and new software, as well as fostering strong connections between families, students and staff.

Your involvement is crucial, and we would be delighted to have you on board! Please email [email protected] with any questions, additional info, or to express your interest.

Hey there science heroes!  Can you help with a science experiment at Science Night? Each experiment station needs 1 lead volunteer and 1-2 helper volunteers. (We also need help with set up, registration and clean up). We will provide all the materials and instructions.

Experiments range from measuring your reaction time, visualizing how a bee transports pollen from one flower to the next, and making a soda pop geyser (without shaking the bottle!).

Volunteers can be middle-school age and up - and get volunteer hours!

Volunteer here!

We would like to take a moment to extend our gratitude to each and every Dranesville family for leaning in as a community to establish daily attendance habits. While there are illnesses and circumstances that are sometimes beyond our control, we appreciate your care in making sure that your children attend school every day.

As a school community we continue to work together to increase student attendance and reduce the number of students who are chronically absent (missing 10% of the school year). We have had 85 days of learning and growing together this school year. On the 85th day of the 22-23 school year 23.9% of our students in K-6 were chronically absent (having missed 8 or more days of school). As of the 85th day of the 23-24 school year 10.7% of our students in K-6 were chronically absent (having missed 8 or more days of school). This improvement in attendance also supports improved access to daily instruction.

Thank you for all of your efforts in getting students to school each day, scheduling appointments so that students can participate in as much of their school day as possible, and for aligning vacations with school breaks.

In the event of illness or if there are any obstacles impacting your child’s attendance, please contact our Attendance Team . We are here to partner with you to remove obstacles so that your child is present and learning every day.

We are looking forward to sharing the joy of our upcoming 90th day of school raffle ($25 Lidl gift cards), second quarter attendance recognitions (perfect, outstanding, and improved), and the 100th day of school celebration (tentatively February 7th)!

Providing Food Security for Students on Weekends

We are thankful for our community partners who support us by providing weekend meals. We support students by providing over 145 meals and the peace of food security during the weekend. Please consider making a contribution to help us in maintaining this weekly support for our students. Thank you!
