School History

Dranesville Elementary School opened on September 6, 1988. Although many changes have occurred since that time, some simple truths remain the same. The Dranesville family of parents, staff, and students continues to be active, caring, and enthusiastic. As we commemorate our more than 30 years of educating children, we invite you to explore the rich history of Dranesville Elementary School and the surrounding community.

What's in a Name?

During the design and construction process, Dranesville Elementary School was referred to as Hiddenbrook Elementary School. Our school was officially given the name Dranesville by the Fairfax County School Board on May 16, 1988. Another name under consideration at that time was Sally Ride Elementary School, in honor of the NASA astronaut who was the first American woman in space. Learn about the origin of the name Dranesville in this video produced for the FCPS Red Apple 21 cable television channel.
